What is Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. There are 5 critical components to Emotional Intelligence, they are:

How is it different to IQ?

IQ measures the general intelligence, which is believed to be an inborn ability. It represents the ability to learn, understand and implement knowledge, logical reasoning and abstract thinking. High IQ is often associated with the success in school.

EQ measures emotional intelligence, which is believed to be a learned and improved ability. It represents the ability to recognize, control, and express one’s own emotion’s, perceive and assess other’s emotion’s. High EQ is often associated with success in life.

Why is it important?

In society, people don’t exist in a vacuum and interacting with someone else is inevitable. On top of that, in the modern, agile workplace, the ability to work within a team to meet Just-In-Time demand is ever increasing. A person demonstrating a high aptitude of emotional intelligence will be able to navigate through social encounters and manage complex social relationships with relative ease.
